*GAMING* Sanctus

OK.  My new game has begun.  I have been working on it for a little under (or maybe over) a year now... It is a departure from the game we just ended (a well loved game that we have been playing over 5 years)... last week's session was the one in which I handed out the Player's Handbooks I had produced along with the character sheets.  I went over some of the aspects of the setting and everyone got their characters ready.  It went really well... so well, in fact that at about 9 PM or so, they all stopped and looked at me expectantly.

Hmmmmm.

OH!  You guys are ready to game already?  (I wasn't expecting that!)  I had MOST everything ready to rock, except of course, the specifics.  See, in MY mind it went like this:  Week one: make characters, explain setting, explain mechanics (like combat determination and advancement pool stuff)... Week two:  First game wherein I could use the character specifics to bait 'the Hook'...

Of course, I am lucky I am ok on the fly... It was fun though and lasted until almost 1 AM.  Then after K & LA left, B & T continued talking in character as if we had never stopped gaming... they talked til 2 AM this way.

I guess it went ok. :)

I'll be posting regular updates on the games... I guess it would help to say a little about the game first... OK... how about excerpts from the Player's Handbook?  My game Introduction:

Welcome to my world... and yours.  It is a world you will both recognize and despair of ever fully understanding.  Your role in it is as deep or perfunctory as you choose.  Your lessons will be hard learned, your rewards few.  Your only trophy will be survival with your soul intact.

There is a delicate balance between Supernatural forces.  One act of desperation may tip it either way.  Unfortunately, you live in a world where every day is filled with desperation.

The setting, if I were to lay it out as your Storyteller, would be thus:  A prophesied day has come.  The Rapture, when mankind is relieved of all its believers and plunged into a seven-year trial called 'the Tribulation’, has begun.  The Antichrist is in power; the world is much changed.  An unseen society of Supernatural beings commute from this world to their own and back again, brokering deals and power, trying to shift the balance of Mankind's fate according to their own agendas.  The face of the world, the government and all of society has morphed into something unrecognized but somehow not unexpected.  Your destiny is entwined in the outcome of a battle that was planned millennia ago to take place on a battlefield of Supernatural determination between forces unaware of their roles.

The question is:  are you equipped to survive it?

That is the gist of it anyway... I can post in more detail about it later... My party consists of four folks... Sam Windwalker, a Ute shaman... Tabitha, a mysterious woman with odd abilities... Sariel, a Fallen angel, Earthbound and trying to get back home... Stuart, a paranoid schizophrenic & forensic scientist who believes Sariel is a figment of his imagination...

Below is the synopsis of game one:

Game One:

Stuart’s lottery number for Level Two Pleasure Trips came up.  He and Sariel made their way through an older part of Memphis to Elvis Presley Blvd., where the bus would be waiting.  After almost taking out a CAMEL for his power cell and truck, they ran into Tabitha, who was in clothes she had procured, carrying an obviously fake ID card.  They all made their way to the bus, which was completely staffed by CAMELs.  Sariel obfuscates.  Tabitha accesses the wireless connection of one of the notebooks and places her fake name on the list, still concerned that the card would not scan.  Stuart realizes this and offers to assist.  He takes her card and places a stolen chip under it.  The scan goes through and they all get on the bus.  Stuart is paranoid and concerned.  They ride 16 hours to Colorado Springs CO Level Two Pleasure Station and take quarters.

Meantime, Sam Windwalker is going about his business when he hears a strange ruckus.  He mounts his horse and rides down to investigate.  He hears roaring and gunfire and smells a bad smell, which his horse calls a NotBeast smell.  A ring of mist surrounds the area and he wisely decides to skirt it.  He stops at a fellow mountain man’s cabin.  Bob is readying to skin out.  Sam offers refuge in his cave.  Bob accepts and says he will arrive later in the evening.  Sam goes on back.  In the evening, Bob crawls up, badly injured.  Sam takes him inside.  He moans and bleeds throughout the night.

As the three from Memphis are taking quarters (8 miles east of Sam’s cave) the sun is rising.  Stuart, Tabitha and Sariel hear what sounds like a vicious animal rending the gates open and people begin to scream and fire at it.  Sariel looks out at it.  It is a Divine Beast and he announces that he thinks the first of the seven seals may have been opened.  Tabitha tears the back wall off the cabin and they escape into the woods.

Sam has noticed that Bob is really messed up, possibly transforming into something unholy.  More hints of this nature come from Wolf, Sam’s wolf hybrid companion.  He decides he can’t save him and so mercifully takes him out of his cave and puts him out of his misery.

As the three head west they come upon the circle of mist.  Tabitha climbs for a higher vantage point and sees a Troop Transport.  The other two go into the circle of mist to get some weapons off the dead soldiers inside it.  Tabitha sees the Hellbeast first… it makes its presence known with a roar.

A mile or so west, Sam hears a distant roar from the scene of last night’s ruckus.  The wind carries him the screams of the three fugitives.  He air walks to over the clearing and begins shooting blessed arrows at the beast.  It is distracted long enough for the three to escape the circle of mist, which apparently the beast cannot leave.  The four of them make their way up to Sam’s place.

After talking a bit they decide to go down to Bob’s to see if the survivalist has any gear they might salvage.  On the way down they hear the beast calling out in a disturbing tongue.  It seems to be calling out to more beasts in the portal to assist it.  They apparently come because the mist begins to spread.  By the time they make it back to the cave with their booty, the mist is only about a quarter mile from the cave.  They decide they have to leave in the morning.

OooOooO.. I covet. That one is supposed to be great for miniatures combat settings... Do you play exclusively with miniatures or use it pen and paper style?

I use the "improvised miniatures" system for combat-- sketch out the terrain on a big pad of paper and use dice or whatever is handy (I like to buy bags of toy soldiers and such at the dollar store). But it works really well as a pen and paper RPG. "Fast, Fun, Furious", just like the ads say. And at $10, it is definitely the best deal on the gaming market.

Now I just need to find some new gamers....
